The matrix near-rings were defined by \textit{J. D. P. Meldrum} and \textit{A. P. J. van der Walt} [Arch. Math. 47, 312-319 (1986; Zbl 0611.16025)] and studied by J. H. Meyer in his thesis and by \textit{A. P. J. van der Walt} [North-Holland Math. Stud. 137, 267-271 (1987; Zbl 0613.16019)]. The notion of structural matrix near-rings was studied by \textit{L. van Wyk} [Commun. Algebra 16, 399-419, 421-435 (1988; Zbl 0641.16014 and Zbl 0641.16015)]. In this paper, the authors show that the two obvious definitions for a structural matrix near-ring yield the same near-ring. Some results on the \(J_ 2\)-radical for a matrix near-ring \(M_ n(R)\) are established in the paper. These results concern a method of obtaining the \(J_ 2\)-radical.
