The main theme of this work is the approximation of functions by polynomial interpolation on a finite interval, where finitely many interpolation conditions (including Hermite interpolation) are imposed. More specifically, the paper studies how well a continuous (or continuously differentiable) function can be approximated by algebraic polynomials if it is required that the polynomials also interpolate this function (and perhaps its derivatives) at a given set of points. The authors are especially interested in the improvement of the rate of approximation near these interpolation points. The paper establishes these types of estimates and shows that they cannot be improved. The first section is divided into two subsections; the first one contains an erudite introduction, review and commentary on previous results, but this discussion pervades the whole text; the second subsection lists the main results. Sections 2 through 5 are devoted to the proof of auxiliary statements and main results. The sixth and last section is devoted to applications; its subsections are titled ``One estimate for \(q\)-monotone functions'' and ``Polynomial approximation with Hermite interpolation of Sobolev and Lipschitz classes''.
