It is shown that the Laplace operator on the 2-sphere \(S^ 2\) is quantum ergodic. More precisely, it is proved that the set of orthonormal basis of Laplace eigenfunctions of \(S^ 2\) is an infinite dimensional Lie group which can be endowed with a probability Haar measure. Relative to that measure almost all bases have an ergodic property. The ergodicity is meant as a type of ergodicity of eigenfunctions appearing for example in an earlier paper of the author [Duke Math. J. 55, 919-941 (1987; Zbl 0643.58029)].
