Given a unital \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\), an injective unital endomorphism \(\alpha:A\to A\) and a conditional expectation \(E\) from \(A\) to the range of \(\alpha\), the author considers the crossed product of \(A\) by \(\alpha\) relative to the transfer operator \(\alpha^{-1}E\). It is shown that, if \(E\) is of index-finite type, then there exists a conditional expectation from the crossed product to \(A\) which is unique under certain hypotheses. A `gauge action' on the crossed product algebra is defined in terms of a central positive element and its KMS states are described.
