The \(\beta\)-expansions of real numbers have been generalized to the case of formal Laurent series over finite fields by the second author and \textit{M. Mkaouar} [Int. J. Number Theory 2, No. 3, 365--378 (2006; Zbl 1157.11004)] and independently by \textit{K. Scheicher} [Finite Fields Appl. 13, No. 2, 394--410 (2007; Zbl 1152.11037)]. Scheicher showed i.a. that every element of \(F_q(X,\beta)\) has a periodic \(\beta\)-expansion if and only if \(\beta\) is a Pisot or Salem element (this class of elements has been defined by \textit{P. T. Bateman} and \textit{A. L. Duquette} [Ill. J. Math. 6, 594--606 (1962; Zbl 0105.02801)]). The main result of the present paper states that if \(\beta\) is a Pisot or Salem unit rational series in the unit disk of \(F_q(X^{-1})\), then its \(\beta\)-expansion is purely periodic. This generalizes a previous result of the second author and \textit{F. Abbes} [Osaka J. Math. 50, No. 3, 807--816 (2013; Zbl 1347.11075)], who gave examples of such situation.
