The author discusses three different methods within Lie symmetry analysis of partial differential equations based on the Fréchet derivative. The potential symmetry makes use of the fact that a conservation law is included in the system of differential equations. The nonlinear telegraph equation serves as an example illustrating all three methods. Computations are performed with a MATHEMATICA package called MathLie.
