Let \(K(z)\) be the rational function field of \(K\), where \(K\) is the field of fractions of a complete local ring. Harbater introduced ``patching'' in inverse Galois theory. Let \(G\) be a group which is generated by subgroups \(G_1\), \(G_2\). Then \(G\) is a Galois group over \(K(z)\) if \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) are realizable as Galois groups over \(K(z)\). Harbater proves this result in the language of formal geometry and uses general GAGA theorems. Another proof is given by Liu and Serre. The paper under review gives an alternative proof of this patching principle. It is based on ``Cartan's lemma'' and uses ring-theoretic GAGA principles. This implies that every finite group occurs as a Galois group of a regular extension over the field of rational functions in one variable over a complete discrete valued field.
