In the paper under review a technique is introduced for constructing locally compact locally countable topologies without additional set- theoretical axioms. The technique is illustrated by the following examples: (1) There exists a locally compact locally countable submetrizable space \(\Lambda\) that is normal, countably paracompact, separable and \(\omega_ 1\)-compact but is not paracompact, not hereditarily normal and not quasi-developable; (2) There is a locally compact locally countable submetrizable space \(\Sigma\) that is orthocompact but not countably metacompact. The method was abstracted from the well known consistent example of \textit{A. J. Ostaszewski} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 14, 505-516 (1976; Zbl 0348.54014)]. It was shown by \textit{E. Pol} [Bull. Acad. Polon. Sci., Sér. Sci. math. astron. phys. 24, 749-751 (1976; Zbl 0339.54036)] that the construction of \(\Lambda\) can be combined with some ideas from her paper to obtain the following example: there is a locally compact locally countable separable normal space that is realcompact but not \(N\)-compact.
