Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field and let \(X\) be an irreducible smooth projective variety over \(k\). Let \(X^{[n]}\) be a Hilbert scheme parametrizing \(0\)-dimensional subschemes of length \(n\) in \(X\). Denote by \(P(n)\) the set of all partitions of the number \(n\). For each partition \(\nu =1^{a_1}\dots n^{a_n}\in P(n)\) let \(X^{(\nu )}\) be the fibered product \(X^{(a_1)}\times \dots \times X^{(a_n)}\) of the \(a_i\)-th symmetric powers \(X^{(a_i)}\) of the variety \(X\). The main result of the paper expresses the Chow-motive (Chow groups) of the Hilbert scheme \(X^{[n]}\) in terms of the Chow-motive (respectively, Chow groups) of varieties \(X^{(\nu )}\) when \(X\) is of dimension two. To be more precise, let \(M:{\mathcal S}m{\mathcal P}roj\to \mathcal{CHM}\) be the canonical functor from the category of smooth projective varieties over \(k\) to the category of Chow motives with coefficients in \(\mathbb Q\) over \(k\). There is an isomorphism \[ M(X^{[n]})\cong \bigotimes _{\nu \in P(n)}M(X^{(\nu )})(t_{\nu }) \] in the category \(\mathcal {CHM}\), where the twisting numbers \(t_{\nu }\) depend on \(\nu \). The same decomposition holds in the \(\mathbb Q\)-localized Voevodsky's triangulated category \(\mathcal {DM}\) of motives over the ground field \(k\).
