This is a nice elementary introduction, for nonspecialists, to compact connected Lie group actions on a sphere \(S^n\) by means of isometries such that the orbit spaces are two-dimensional. Such orbit spaces have been investigated extensively. The authors consider several classical examples and give accessible, explicit descriptions of how these orbit spaces and their underlying isotropy groups are computed.
