It is proposed to find a pair of action variables \((J,\Psi)\) such that \(J\) is nearly constant and \(\Psi\) increases almost linearly with time even though the untransformed Hamiltonian is strongly nonlinear as it is in the study of accelerator design. A typical problem with ``\(2{1\over 2}\) degrees of freedom'' is treated. The object is to find bounds on the motion valid for very long but not infinite times.
