    In this paper the authors introduce and study some norms on the set of algebraic numbers which are related to Mahler's measure. These are a natural generalization of the metric Mahler measure introduced by the reviewer and \textit{C. J. Smyth} in [J. Number Theory 86, No. 2, 368--387 (2001; Zbl 1030.11056)]. For some classes of algebraic numbers (surds, Pisot numbers, Salem numbers) these norms are evaluated explicitly. The main results describe the situations when these norms defined as some infima are actually attained. The authors also state a conjecture which implies both Lehmer's and Schinzel-Zassenhaus conjectures.
