The approximation by local Galerkin methods of partial differential equations with high-order spatial derivatives produces stiff systems of ordinary differential equations. The paper compares three methods for solving such systems: semi-implicit spectral deferred correction, additive Runge-Kutta, and exponential time differencing. All of these methods are effective, and the first is easiest to implement.
