The authors propose a weighted essentially nonoscillating (WENO) finite difference scheme on nonsmooth grids with high order of accuracy where the solution is smooth. This paper deals only with time-independent problems. The method is based on an appropriate redistribution of the residual. Multi-dimensional problems are handled in one-dimensional steps, with the addition of artificial viscosity. A convergence theorem of Lax-Wendroff type for weak solutions is proved.
