The problem discussed is that of grid generation for phase-transition problems, in which there is an interface which may develop fingers. The author proposes an algorithm based on blending with tensor-product \(B\)- splines. The parameters of the mapping are selected so as to minimize a functional designed to make the Jacobian nearly constant and the grid nearly orthogonal. Application is made to geometries arising in the Bridgman process for the solidification of binary alloys.
