The authors study multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to two positive measures supported on the unit circle, introducing both type I and type II polynomials (a straightforward generalization of the type I (Latin-) and type II (German-) polynomials known from the theory of the generalized Hermite-Padé table). It is shown that the generalization can be seen as simultaneous rational approximation to the Carathéodory functions connected to the measures (at the points \(z=0\) and \(z=\infty\)). The main tool is the interpretation inn the form of a Riemann-Hilbert problem (for multiple orthogonal polynomials on the real line, this approach has been given in [\textit{W. Van Assche, J. Geronimo} and \textit{A. Kuijlaars}, Special functions 2000: current perspective and future directions. Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute, Tempe, AZ, USA, May 29--June 9, 2000. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers. NATO Sci. Ser. II, Math. Phys. Chem. 30, 23--59 (2001; Zbl 0997.42012)]. Moreover, four examples are treated with respect to the behavior of the zeros of the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials; the authors express their findings as ``the behavior of the zeros is not always as we hope''. Finally, it is shown that the recurrence relations for the polynomials can easily be deduced from the Riemann-Hilbert problem. An interesting paper.
