The authors study a particular type of symmetry, namely (proper) affine collineations, in connection with electromagnetic fields; more specifically, they discuss the existence of an affine vector field in an Einstein-Maxwell spacetime (both non-null and null cases), i.e. to characterize or determine all Einstein-Maxwell solutions which admit proper affine collineations. At first, the authors consider the non-null electromagnetic field case and show that there are no solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations admitting a proper affine collineation. For the null electromagnetic field case, they characterize all the possible solutions with such property.
