This paper discusses subgroups and homogeneous spaces of compact matrix quantum groups. The first part is devoted to the general theory. After reviewing the definition of compact matrix quantum groups and quantum spaces, the author introduces the notions of a quantum subgroup and of the action of a quantum group on a quantum space. Then he shows that the representation corresponding to such an action can be decomposed into irreducibles. Next, he defines the quotient space of a quantum group by a quantum subgroup, shows that the original quantum group acts canonically on the quotient and computes the multiplicities of irreducible components in this case. Finally, the author discusses three subsequently stronger conditions related to homogeneity, which in the commutative case are all equivalent but are shown to be different in the quantum case. The second part of the paper gives concrete examples of the theory developed in the first part. The author gives a complete description of all subgroups and homogeneous spaces of the quantum groups \(\text{SU}_q(2)\) and \(\text{SO}_q\) for \(q\in [-1, 1]\backslash \{0\}\).
