An old result of S. Mazur yields that the unit spheres of all \(L_ p\)'s for \(1\leq p< \infty\) are uniformly homeomorphic. E. Odell and Th. Schlumprecht proved recently that if \(X\) is an infinite-dimensional Banach space with an unconditional basis then the unit sphere of \(X\) and the unit sphere of \(\ell_ 1\) are uniformly homeomorphic if and only if \(X\) does not contain \(\ell^ n_ \infty\) uniformly in \(n\). In this paper this result is extended to the setting of Banach lattices. It is proved that: If \(X\) is a Banach lattice with a weak unit then there exists a probability space \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) so that the unit sphere \(S(L_ 1(\Omega, \Sigma, \mu))\) is uniformly homeomorphic to the unit sphere \(S(X)\) if and only if \(X\) does not contain \(\ell^ n_ \infty\) uniformly in \(n\). A consequence of this is that if \(X\) is a separable infinite-dimensional Banach lattice then \(S(X)\) and \(S(\ell_ 1)\) are uniformly homeomorphic if and only if \(X\) does not contain \(\ell^ n_ \infty\) uniformly in \(n\). Some quantitative versions of this consequence are also given.
