Let \(M\) be an \(n\)-dimensional projective manifold and \(D\) be a divisor with normal crossings. If the divisor \(K+ M\), where \(K\) is the canonical divisor, is numerically effective, big and ample modulo \(D\), then the manifold \(M\backslash D\) admits a unique almost complete Kähler-Einstein metric (Tian-Yau metric). The author proves that this metric is in fact complete. He gives also the following algebraic geometric characterization of non-singular quotients of Hermitian symmetric domains with finite volume. Let \(M\) and \(D\) be as above. Suppose moreover, that the vector bundle \(\Omega(\log D)\) can be splitted holomorphically as a direct sum of irreducible holomorphic vector bundles \(V_1\oplus\cdots\oplus V_k\) such that for each \(i\), either (1) there is a non-trivial irreducible bundle associated to \(V_i\) which admits a non-zero holomorphic section, or \[ 2(m_i+ 1) C^{m_i- 2}_i(\Omega(\log D)) C_2(V_i)= m_i C^{m_i}_1(V_i) C^{n- m_i}_1(\Omega(\log D)).\tag{2} \] Then \(M\backslash D\) is a quotient of a bounded symmetric domain by a discrete group with finite volume. A similar characterization of the quotient with orbifold singularities is also given.
