The main idea of this paper is to reduce the analysis of the asymptotic behavior (stability, instability, presence of oscillations related to chaos) of a nonlinear dynamical system defined by a time-invariant ordinary differential equation \[ \dot x = f(x), \qquad x\in\mathbb R^n \] to the analysis of a simpler approximating system \[ \dot x = f_0(x). \] The more classical example of such a reduction is the local linearization method around a steady state solution. The authors exploit a generalization of the notion of homogeneity (more precisely, a further generalization of the notion of homogeneity in the bi-limit) with respect to a dilation. They present several results based on the existence of Lyapunov functions and/or Chetaev functions for the approximating system. Finally, some examples are discussed, in order to illustrate the results.
