The authors investigate a Scott-Zhang type linear interpolation of \(H^1\)-functions by continuous piecewise multilinear polynomials in two and three dimensions, respectively. This includes approximations on hierarchically generated nets with hanging nodes. The authors prove optimal local convergence rates.
