The authors give a characterization of all bijections of the plane preserving inscriptibility of convex quadrilaterals and then they study some functional equations which arise in this context. First it is proved: Theorem 1. A bijection \(F\) from \(\mathbb{R}^2\) onto \(\mathbb{R}^2\) respects inscriptibility of convex quadrilaterals if and only if it is of type \(F(x)= kf(x)+ F(0)\), where \(k\) is a non zero constant and \(f\) is a linear isometry of \(\mathbb{R}^2\). Then it is proved that in arbitrary real inner product spaces every isometry is linear, i.e. Theorem 2. Let \((X, |\cdot |)\) and \((Y, |\cdot |)\) be real inner product spaces and let \(T: X_x\to Y_x\) be a bijective solution to the functional equation \[ {{|T(x)- T(y) |} \over {|T(x) |\cdot |T(y) |}} = {{|x-y |} \over {|x|\cdot |y|}}, \qquad x,y\in X_x= X\setminus \{0 \} \tag{1} \] then there exists exactly one linear automorphism \(F\) of \(X\) onto itself such that \(|F(x) |= |x|\) for all \(x\in X\) and \(F|_{X_x} =T\). Conversely, for every such isometry \(F\), the function \(T= T|_{X_x}\) yields a solution to equation (1).
