Let \(f(X_ 1,...,X_{n^ 2},Y_ 1,...,Y_{n^ 2})\) be a multilinear element in the free associative algebra over a field of characteristic 0 and let f be a Capelli polynomial both with respect to the sets of variables X and Y (i.e. f(X,Y) is a skew-symmetric function of \(X_ 1,...,X_{n^ 2}\) and \(Y_ 1,...,Y_{n^ 2})\). \textit{A. Regev} [Commun. Algebra 8, 1417-1467 (1980; Zbl 0437.16012)] has conjectured that there exists an f(X,Y) which is not a polynomial identity for the \(n\times n\) matrix algebra. The affirmative answer of this conjecture gives quantitative information about the identities of the matrices. The purpose of the paper under review is not only to solve affirmatively this problem. Using the Razmyslov-Procesi approach to the trace identities the author goes beyond and obtains some other quantitative results on the invariants of the generic matrices.
