Let X be a space and Y an infinite loop space. Let \(QX=\lim_{n}\Omega^ n\Sigma^ nX\). The main result of the paper shows that a map QX\(\to Y\) is an infinite loop map if and only if it commutes with the Kahn-Priddy transfer. This result is used to show that, given a transfer commuting map f: BU\(\to Y\), where Y is an infinite loop space with only finitely many non-trivial homotopy groups, one can find a positive integer N such that Nf: BU\(\to Y\) is an infinite loop map. If Y has ''the splitting property'' this is true for any H-map BU\(\to Y\). Some examples are considered.
