This paper is a study of the possible relations between the framework of quantum field theory and of quantum statistical mechanics. It is shown that any local quantum field admits thermodynamical equilibrium states for all positive temperatures provided it satisfies a nuclearity condition proposed by one of the authors, and which restricts the admissible number of local degrees of freedom. After a long detailed introduction, the spaces of localized states are characterized and then local and global equilibrium are considered.
