Let \(A=[A_1 A_2]\) be an \(m\times(m+n)\) matrix over an algebraically closed field \(F\), where \(A_1\) (\(A_2\)) is an \(m\times m\) (\(m\times n)\) matrix, \(m>0\), \(n\geq0\). The paper is concerned with the existence of \(A\) with prescribed block similarity class and a prescribed submatrix that does not contain principal entries of \(A_1\). Without loss of generality, the author assumes that the prescribed submatrix is situated in the rows \(1,\dots,p\) and columns \(m-q+1,\dots,m,\dots,m+t\), where \(p,q,t\) are non-negative integers satisfying \(p+q\leq m\) and \(t\leq n\). Then he obtains the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the above \(A\) in the cases \(m=p+q\), \(t=0\) and \(m=p+q\), \(n=t\). The case \(n=0\) was solved by \textit{I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek} and \textit{F. van Schagen} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 25, No. 1, 55-70 (1989; Zbl 0706.15011)], \textit{F. C. Silva} [Port. Math. 47, No. 1, 103-113 (1990; Zbl 0716.15010)] and \textit{I. Zaballa} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 25, No. 1, 39-54 (1989; Zbl 0695.15006)].
