    Let R be an unramified regular local ring and let M, N be finitely generated R-modules such that the length \(\ell (Tor_ i(M,N))\) is finite for \(i\geq 1\). If \(\sum_{i\geq j}(-1)^{j-i}\ell (Tor_ j(M,N))=0\) then \(Tor_ j(M,N)=0\) for \(j\geq i\). This builds on a paper by \textit{S. Lichtenbaum} [Ill. J. Math. 10, 220-226 (1966; Zbl 0139.266)] which dealt with cases \(i\geq 2\).
