Mahlo's operation on subsets of a regular uncountable cardinal \(\kappa\) can be iterated \(\kappa\) times and even \(\kappa^+\) times if one considers equivalence classes modulo the ideal of nonstationary subsets of \(\kappa\) leading to the concept ''\(\kappa\) is greatly Mahlo''. The author generalizes this operation for the subsets of \(P_{\kappa}(\lambda)\) obtaining a generalized Mahlo hierarchy which is applied to the problem of defining canonical filter sequences for Mitchell's models containing many measurable cardinals.
