\textit{J. B. Conrey, E. Fransen, R. Klein} and \textit{C. Scott} [J. Number Theory 56, 214-226 (1996; Zbl 0851.11028)] proved an asymptotic formula for the sum \[ \sum_{\substack{ h=1\\ (h,k)=1}} ^k S(h,k)^{2m}, \] where \(S(h,k)\) is the classical Dedekind sum. \textit{W. Zhang} [J. Théor. Nombres Bordx. 8, No. 2, 429-442 (1996; Zbl 0871.11033)] obtained a sharper estimate for this sum in the case where \(m=1\) and \(k\) is a prime power. Expanding on the above results the authors of this paper establish the following asymptotic formula: \[ \sum_{\substack{ a=1\\ (a,q)=1}} ^q \zeta^2\left({1\over 2},{a\over q}\right)S^2(a,q) = {q^3\over 144}\zeta(3) \prod_{p|q}\left(1-{1\over p^3}\right)+O\left(q^{5/2} \exp\left({3\log q\over\log\log q}\right)\right), \] where \(q\geq 3\), \(\zeta(s,\alpha)\) is the Hurwitz zeta-function and \(\zeta(s)\) is the Riemann zeta-function.
