The paper presents a detailed review of the various modeling techniques available for the bio-mass treatments as well for the bio-mass transport simulation. As the majority of the microbial life on earth is represented by bio-film, its displacement is mainly caused by cell growth and its division. This can be affected by other processes such as the changing the bio-film volume through the process of the attachment and detachment. In general there are two broad categories of the bio-film models -- continuum and discrete, based on the bio-mass representation. The model is further divided by considering the dimensionality, the process of diffusion and the bio-mass spreading. The continuum model is based on the conservation principle and it is represented by a set of equations for which analytical and numerical solutions are suggested. The discrete model is developed on the assumption of inherent stochastic nature of all the living systems. It is further divided into cellular automation, hybrid differential and individual based model. Various solution methodologies are also mentioned. The paper presents a wealth of information useful for the researchers in the mathematical biology and the interpretations of the experimental results in bio-film analysis.
