The author addresses himself to the question of formulating a discrete numerical computational scheme for a nonlinear continuous model system which can eliminate computational instability. It is shown that, by formulating a perfect square conservative time difference scheme, linear and nonlinear instability phenomena can be eliminated. A preliminary check of this scheme on a quasi-geographic barotropic vorticity equation in spherical co-ordinates by the use of a simple Rossby-Haurwitz wave is found to be satisfactory.
