The paper suggests a method for synchronization of two identical chaotic systems interacting according to the drive-response coupling scheme. A signal of the drive system is fed to the controlled response system in such a way that the synchronization error system becomes passive from the external input signal to the output signal. Then, an external input signal can be constructed such that, based on Lyapunov stability theory, the trivial fixed point of the synchronization error becomes asymptotically stable. The latter holds under rather general conditions which are satisfied for many known dynamical systems. The obtained analytical results are illustrated numerically for the Genesio-Tesi and Qi chaotic systems.
