The main subject of the paper under review is to give constraints on the existence of cosmetic surgeries and lens surgeries on knots in the 3-sphere by using the LMO (Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki) invariant introduced by \textit{T. T. Q. Le} et al. [Topology 37, No. 3, 539--574 (1998; Zbl 0897.57017)]. Using the constraints so obtained, for example, it is shown that all prime knots with less than or equal to 11 crossings have no purely cosmetic surgery with only one single exception.
