Es sei \(G\) eine endliche Gruppe. Zunächst wird mit Hilfe eines Ergebnisses von \textit{R. Brauer} and \textit{K. A. Fowler} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 62, 565-583 (1955; Zbl 0067.01004)] gezeigt: jede nichtabelsche einfache Gruppe \(G\) besitzt eine Untergruppe \(H\), für die \(|G|^{1/3}<|H|<|G|^{2/3}\) gilt (Theorem 4). Eine Teilmenge \(A\) von \(G\) wird Basis von \(G\) genannt, falls \(G=\{ab:\;a,b\in A\}\); es sei \(r(G)=\min\{|A|: A \hbox{ ist eine Basis von }G\}\). Ist \(G\) nilpotent, so ist \(r(G)<4|G|^{1/2}\) (Theorem 14), ist \(G\) nichtabelsch und einfach, so ist \(r(G)<2|G|^{2/3}-1\) (Theorem 16), ist ein Kompositionsfaktor maximaler Ordnung von \(G\) zyklisch (was insbesondere dann der Fall, wenn \(G\) auflösbar ist), so ist \(r(G)<2|G|^{2/3}\) (Theorem 17), und ist \(G\) beliebig, dann ist \(r(G)<2|G|^{3/4}\) (Theorem 18). Es sei \(0<\varepsilon<1\) und \(N(x)\) die Anzahl der positiven ganzen Zahlen \(n\) mit der Eigenschaft, daß \(n\leq x\) und \(r(G)<|G|^{1/2+\varepsilon}\) für alle Gruppen der Ordnung \(n\) gilt; dann hat ein Resultat von \textit{E. A. Bertram} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 56, 63-66 (1976; Zbl 0355.20020)] \(\lim_{n\to \infty}N(x)/x=1\) zur Folge (Theorem 19). Ist \(A_ n\) die alternierende und \(S_ n\) die symmetrische Gruppe vom Grad \(n\), so wird gezeigt, daß \(r(A_ n)<(\sqrt{2}+(1/\sqrt{2}))|A|^{1/2}<2.13|A_n|^{1/2}\) und \(r(S_ n)<3|S_n|^{1/2}\) gilt.
