The main results of the paper are a new construction of the topological entropy \(h(T)\) for continuous actions \(T\) of the group \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\), \(n\in{\mathbb{N}}\), and a variational characterization of the topological entropy \(h(T)=\sup_{\mu}h_{\mu}(T)\), where \(h_{\mu}(T)\) is the metric entropy of an action \(T\). The least upper bound is taken over all \(T\)-invariant Borel probability measures \(\mu\). The author believes that he can apply this construction to continuous actions of any unimodular amenable groups.
