For a finite \(p\)-group \(G\) and a finitely generated \(\mathbb{Z} G\)-lattice \(M\), the author studies the number \(| G|\cdot\text{rk}(M^ G)- \text{rk}(M)\), \(M^ G\) the submodule of invariants of \(M\), and its connection to the Tate cohomology groups \(H^ i(G;M)\). His main theorem is a strong non-vanishing result in terms of the above number. It has the following two interesting corollaries, the first being a generalization of a result due to Nakayama and Rim: 1. \(M\) is projective if and only if \(H^ i(G;M)=0\) for two values of \(i\) which are not congruent mod \(2\). 2. If \(G\) is not periodic then \(H^ i(G;\mathbb{Z})\neq 0\) for all sufficiently large \(i\).
