A linear transformation formula of the Gauss hypergeometric function is used to derive an asymptotic expansion for a ratio of gamma functions by applying a method of Darboux. The expansion generalizes an asymptotic expansion of similar type considered by \textit{R. B. Dingle} [``Asymptotic expansions: Their derivation and interpretation'' (1973; Zbl 0279.41030)]. The main idea uses the relation between the coefficients in asymptotic expansions and the behaviour of the nearest singular point of the expanded function [cf. \textit{P. Flajolet} and \textit{A. Odlyzko}, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 3, No. 2, 216-240 (1990; Zbl 0712.05004)]. Some numerical calculations are given.
