The theme of this paper is the transfer of the descending chain condition between a semiprime ring \(R\) and its subring of constants with respect to an algebraic \(q\)-skew derivation \(\delta\). In particular, \(R\) is an algebra over a field \(K\), there is a \(K\)-algebra automorphism \(\sigma\) of \(R\) such that \(\delta\) is a \(K\)-linear \(\sigma\)-derivation, and \(q\) is a nonzero scalar in \(K\) such that \(\delta\sigma=q\sigma\delta\). The corresponding ring of constants is \(R^{(\delta)}=\ker(\delta)\). In the case of an ordinary derivation (that is, \(\sigma=\text{id}_R\)), the first and third authors have shown that \(R^{(\delta)}\) is left Artinian if and only if \(R\) is left Artinian [Isr. J. Math. 83, No. 3, 329-342 (1993; Zbl 0799.16029) and (*) J. Algebra 171, No. 3, 826-844 (1995; Zbl 0823.16026)]. Here the authors prove that \(R^{(\delta)}\) left Artinian implies \(R\) left Artinian for arbitrary algebraic \(q\)-skew derivations, and they establish the converse under the additional hypothesis that \(\sigma\) is algebraic. Since \(\text{id}_R-\sigma\) is a \(1\)-skew \(\sigma\)-derivation, it follows that when \(\sigma\) is algebraic, the fixed ring \(R^{(\sigma)}\) is left Artinian if and only if \(R\) is left Artinian. This establishes a result of the first author [(*), loc. cit.] without requiring assumptions on the characteristic of \(K\).
