After the introduction, the covers and envelopes in Grothendieck categories are investigated in the second part. In the next section ``Flat covers and cotorsion envelopes of complexes'' it is shown that every complex of modules admits a flat cover and a cotorsion envelope, and the pair \((\mathcal F, \mathcal C)\) (flat and cotorsion complexes) is a cotorsion theory (Theorem 3.3). The last part is devoted to some applications. Here \(\mathcal L\) denotes the class of all exact complexes with flat terms, \(\mathcal B\) the class of all complexes with flat terms and \(\mathcal E\) the class of all exact complexes. If \(\mathcal G\) is any of these classes, then every complex of modules admits a \(\mathcal G\)-cover and \(\mathcal G^{\perp}\)-envelope and the pair \((\mathcal G,\mathcal G^{\perp})\) is a cotorsion theory (Theorems 4.2, 4.3 and Corollary 4.6). The end of the paper is devoted to the pair \((\mathcal E^{\perp}, \mathcal E)\).
