The authors study a viscously damped linear discrete dynamic system with several degrees of freedom. A general approximate method is developed to determine the critical damping surfaces separating regions of partial or complete overdamping from those of underdamping. Numerical examples for one or two degrees of freedom illustrate the proposed method; the results are plotted in diagrams.
