The authors consider the equation \(u_t=\alpha u-(1+\partial_{xx})^2u-uu_x\) on the domain \([-\lambda,\lambda]\), with periodic boundary conditions and only considering odd solutions. Their main interest is in the bifurcations from the zero state as \(\lambda\) varies. They analyse these in great detail using centre manifold theory, and find that these bifurcations create either 4 or 8 steady states, each (to leading order) proportional to \(\sin{(N\pi x/\lambda)}\) or \(\sin{(N\pi x/\lambda)}+a\sin{((N+1)\pi x/\lambda)}\) for some constant \(a\) and integer \(N\). The authors also determine the stability of these steady states, showing that they are either stable nodes or saddles.
