Let \(UT(\alpha_1,\ldots,\alpha_m)\) be the algebra of upper block triangular matrices with \(i\)-th diagonal block consisting of \(\alpha_i\times\alpha_i\) matrices, \(i=1,\ldots,m\). In the paper under review the authors study elementary \(G\)-gradings of \(UT(\alpha_1,\ldots,\alpha_m)\) when \(G\) is an abelian group and the base field is of characteristic 0. They consider the problem whether two algebras \(UT(\alpha_1,\ldots,\alpha_m)\) and \(UT(\beta_1,\ldots,\beta_n)\) are isomorphic as \(G\)-graded algebras if they have the same \(G\)-graded polynomial identities. The authors answer into affirmative this question if one of the algebras has at most two blocks and, in the general case, under some mild restrictions. When the field is algebraically closed, the results hold for arbitrary \(G\)-gradings.
