The author presents a method for computing the rank of \(E(\overline \mathbb{Q}(s,t))\) for some elliptic curve \(E/\mathbb{Q}(s,t)\). To do this, a generalization of a method due to \textit{B. van Geemen} and \textit{J. Werner} [Lect. Notes Math. 1399, 48--59 (1989; Zbl 0697.14027)] to calculate the fourth Betti number for a nodal 3-fold projective hypersurface is given.
