The author discusses the mathematical work of the little know Nicolas Vilant (1737--1807). Vilant's publication output was small. He published an early paper on cubic equations and a textbook on mathematical analysis designed by his students at St. Andrews, where he was professor. The author also analyses the way. Vilant employed many assistants at St. Andrews where a rare opportunity for recent graduates was provided to improve their mathematical skills. Vilant's main influence was on the students who attended St. Andrews when he was professor. Some of these students would go on to play key rolls in British mathematics.
