The author defined [J. K-Theory 6, No. 3, 387--504 (2010; Zbl 1303.18019)] the concept of what he calls a weight structure on a triangulated category. The axioms for a weight structure are somewhat similar to the axioms of a \(t\)-structure, but are not the same. In the paper under review the author studies conditions when a weight structure is compatible with a \(t\)-structure. This compatibility is called by the author the existence of nice triangles. The main result of the paper shows basically that the existence of a \(t\)-structure and a weight structure producing nice triangles for each object (i.e., that the two structures are compatible) is equivalent to a filtration of the triangulated category by semisimple abelian subcategories with certain orthogonality properties (which he calls strongly semi-orthogonal generating family). The paper ends with various applications to the derived category of various types of motives.
