Let \({\mathcal C}=({\mathcal C},({\mathcal P_ i})_{i\in I})\) denote a chamber system in the sense of \textit{J. Tits} [in The geometric vein, 519-547 (1982; Zbl 0496.51001)]. A connected chamber system is called a classical Tits chamber system if for \(i,j\in I\) and \(c\in {\mathcal C}\) the system \(\Delta_{\{ i,j\} }(c)\) is a generalized \(m_{ij}\)-gon (or digon). Here the chambers of \(\Delta_{\{ i,j\} }(c)\) are the chambers in the component of the partition \({\mathcal P}_{i,j}\) which contains \(c\), where \({\mathcal P}_{i,j}\) is the join of \({\mathcal P}_ i\) and \({\mathcal P}_ j\). The partitions on \(\Delta_{\{ i,j\} }(c)\) are induced by the \({\mathcal P}_ k\)'s. \({\mathcal C}\) is locally finite if \(\Delta_{\{i,j\}}(c)\) is finite. If \({\mathcal C}\) has a transitive automorphism group \(G\) then \({\mathcal C}\) is described as \({\mathcal C}={\mathcal C}(G;B;(X_ i)_{i\in I})\), where \(B\) is a subgroup, \(X_ i\) (\(i\in I\)) are subgroups of \(G\) containing \(B\), chambers are cosets \(Bg\) (\(g\in G\)), and \(Bg\) is \(i\)-adjacent with \(Bh\) if and only if \(X_ ig=X_ jh\). In this paper the locally finite classical Tits chamber systems \({\mathcal C}={\mathcal C}(G;B;X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3)\) of rank 3 are investigated. The author determines the possible diagrams together with the parabolic subgroups \(X_{ij}=\langle X_ i,X_ j\rangle\). The long list of precise statements cannot be reproduced here. Examples for chamber systems of almost all types in the list have been constructed [see \textit{T. Meixner}, Mitt. Math. Semin. Giessen 174 (1986; Zbl 0611.51008)]. The proof of this classification also includes the determination of the quasiparabolic systems of rank 3 (for this notion we refer the reader to the paper under review). It was shown by the author [Invent. Math. 87, 603-641 (1987; Zbl 0607.20019)] that the result on chamber systems can be reduced to the determination of the quasiparabolic systems. The proof of these results uses ``amalgam type'' techniques and a theorem of \textit{R. Niles} [J. Algebra 75, 484-494 (1982; Zbl 0491.20020)] reducing the investigations to characteristic 2 or 3 type parabolic systems. A large part of the paper contains structural information and results on representations of groups of Lie type of small rank, which are of independent interest. For related work see another paper by the author [Geom. Dedicata 25, 5-70 (1988; Zbl 0642.20010)].
