Let \[ Lu=\sum_{| \alpha |,| \beta | \leq m}(- 1)^{| \beta |}D^{\beta}(a_{\alpha \beta}(x)D^{\alpha}u) \] be a uniformly elliptic differential operator acting on the real- valued function u(x) on \(\Omega \subset R^ N\). Consider the existence of the solutions of semilinear elliptic boundary value problem of the form \[ (1)\quad Lu-\lambda_ ju+g(x,u)=f\quad in\quad \Omega;\quad \partial^ iu/\partial v^ i=0\quad on\quad \Omega \quad (i=1,...,m-1) \] where \(\lambda_ j\) is an eigenvalue of L, \(\partial /\partial v\) is the normal derivative and \(f\in H^{-m}(\Omega)\). \textit{V. L. Shapiro} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 8, 857-871 (1984; Zbl 0565.35043)] studied the case that g has unbounded nonlinearities, but linear growth wasn't covered. The paper in question considers the case of linear growth. The used method is different from the previous ones.
