The author considers a two-dimensional singularly perturbed convection- diffusion elliptic model problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The streamline diffusion finite element method of \textit{T. J. Hughes} and \textit{A. Brooks} [Finite element methods for convection dominated flows, Winter ann. Meet. ASME, AMD 34, 19-35 (1979; Zbl 0423.76067)] is applied to the numerical solution of the problem. A modified streamline diffusion scheme of \textit{C. Johnson}, \textit{A. H. Schatz} and \textit{L. B. Wahlbin} [Math. Comput. 49, 25-38 (1987; Zbl 0629.65111)] possesses better error estimates in case of piecewise linear elements on triangles. The author improves these pointwise error estimates and global \(L^ 1\)-error estimates in the presence of typical singularities.
