The authors study a strictly hyperbolic and genuinely nonlinear \(2\times 2\) system of conservation laws. They establish the existence of a global weak entropy solution to the Cauchy problem with arbitrary bounded measurable initial function having sufficiently small \(L^\infty\)-norm. No restrictions on the geometry of the shock-rarefaction curves (like in [\textit{J.~Glimm} and \textit{P.~D.~Lax}, Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 101, 112 p. (1970; Zbl 0204.11304)]) are imposed.
